JASPER,S.P.; VELINI,E.D.; PICOLI JR.,G.J.; CARBONARI,C.A.; SILVA,P.R.A..
ABSTRACT One of the major constraints to sustainable tillage is the rapid decomposition of the dry matter. The mechanism known to facilitate this process is the interference in the metabolic pathways of lignin polymers from spraying herbicide underdoses. This study has aimed to verify the effect of underdoses of haloxyfop-methyl in the synthesis of lignin and correlate the interference of this phenolic compound in the decomposition of maize stover. Two preliminary experiments were carried out in a greenhouse to set up the best underdoses to be applied in the yield area experiment. The treatments in the first experiment consisted of: 0; 2.5; 5 and 10 g a.i. ha-1 of haloxyfop-methyl herbicide. And in the second experiment: 0; 0.625; 1.25 and 2.5 g a.i. ha-1...

Martinez,Camila O.; Silva,Celia Maria M. S.; Fay,Elisabeth F.; Abakerli,Rosangela B.; Maia,Aline H. N.; Durrant,Lucia R..
Sulfentrazone is amongst the most widely used herbicides for treating the main crops in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, but few studies are available on the biotransformation of this compound in Brazilian soils. Soil samples of Rhodic Hapludox soil were supplemented with sulfentrazone (0.7 µg active ingredient (a.i.) g-1 soil) and maintained at 27ºC. The soil moisture content was corrected to 30, 70 or 100 % water holding capacity (WHC) and maintained constant until the end of the experimental period. Herbicide-free soil samples were used as controls. Another experiment was carried out using soil samples maintained at a constant moisture content of 70% WHC, supplemented or otherwise with the herbicide, and submitted to different temperatures of 15, 30 and...

Matallo,M.B; Almeida,S.D.B; Cerdeira,A.L; Franco,D.A; Blanco,F.M.G; Menezes,P.T.C; Luchini,L.C; Moura,M.A.M; Duke,S.O.
A better method for determination of shikimate in plant tissues is needed to monitor exposure of plants to the herbicide glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] and to screen the plant kingdom for high levels of this valuable phytochemical precursor to the pharmaceutical oseltamivir. A simple, rapid, and efficient method using microwave-assisted extraction (MWAE) with water as the extraction solvent was developed for the determination of shikimic acid in plant tissues. High performance liquid chromatography was used for the separation of shikimic acid, and chromatographic data were acquired using photodiode array detection. This MWAE technique was successful in recovering shikimic acid from a series of fortified plant tissues at more than 90% efficiency...

MODERN APPROACHES FOR THE STUDY OF s-TRIAZINE HERBICIDE BIOREMEDIATION IN AGRICULTURAL SOILS R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Hernández,Marcela; Morgante,Verónica; Flores,Cecilia; Villalobos,Patricio; González,Myriam; Miralles,Pola; Dinamarca,Alejandro; Seeger,Michael.
The extensive use of s-triazine herbicides in diverse countries causes environmental and health concern. Simazine and atrazine are s-triazines widely used in agriculture and forestry. Although, natural dissipation of s-triazines in soils by physicochemical processes has been described, the main mechanism for their removal is biological degradation by microorganisms. Bioremediation is a successful strategy for the removal of i-triazines in soil. For bioaugmentation processes, s-triazine-degrading bacteria are required, which isolation from agricultural soils was described in this report. Studies of s-triazine adsorption and leaching in soil are useful to determine the bioavailability of these herbicides. The detection of s-triazine-degrading catabolic...

Molecular Basis for Resistance to Fluazifop-P-Butyl in Itchgrass (Rottboellia cochinchinensis) from Costa Rica Planta Daninha
CASTILLO-MATAMOROS,R.; BRENES-ANGULO,A.; HERRERA-MURILLO,F.; GÓMEZ ALPÍZAR.,L..
Rottboellia cochinchinensis is an annual grass weed species known as itchgrass, or "caminadora" in America´s Spanish speaking countries, and has become a major and troublesome weed in several crops. The application of fluazifop-P-butyl at recommended rates (125 g a.i. ha-1) was observed to be failing to control itchgrass in a field in San José, Upala county, Alajuela province, Costa Rica. Plants from the putative resistant R. cochinchinensis population survived fluazifop-P-butyl when treated with 250 g a.i. ha-1 (2X label rate) at the three- to four-leaf stage under greenhouse conditions. PCR amplification and sequencing of partial carboxyl transferase domain (CT) of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) gene were used to determine the molecular mechanism of...

Abstract Contamination of water sources due to herbicide is of great concern. Clomazone is a pesticide with a high contamination potential which could possibility lixiviate to water streams. Changes caused by residual herbicide include flora modifications which are generally detrimental for some species. The lack of morphological studies performed in aquatic plants exposed to herbicide-contaminated environments has encouraged the development of our research. For the first time, we present a study that aimed to evaluate leaf injuries visible to the naked eye as well as microscopical effects which may be caused by clomazone on Pistia stratiotes. Pistia stratiotes was subjected to five concentrations of clomazone. Our analysis showed leaf injuries,...

Morpho-Architectural Traits that Allow the Regeneration of Eustachys retusa (poaceae) in Systems with Intensive Glyphosate Application Planta Daninha
PANIGO,E.S.; ALESSO,C.A.; DELLAFERRERA,I.M.; OLIVELLA,J.; PERRETA,M.G..
ABSTRACT Eustachys retusa has low sensitivity to glyphosate at the reproductive stage. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of glyphosate on adult E. retusa plants in order to identify the traits that make possible their regeneration in no-tillage systems. For this purpose, reproductive-stage specimens from wild populations were treated with glyphosate at two different rates (480 and 1,200 g a.i. ha-1) including a non-treated control. Results demonstrated that glyphosate could control E. retusa plants at reproductive stage at 1,200 g a.i. ha-1 dose. However, a certain proportion of plants can survive despite having full chlorosis as a consequence of basal bud activation (bud bank) and the presence of reserves in the rhizome. These...

Nitrogen availability and glyphosate hormesis on white oat Planta Daninha
R.O. Silva,Diecson; A. Silva,Álvaro A.; D. Novello,Bruna; Rieder,Eduardo; M. Aguiar,Adalin C.; J. Basso,Claudir.
Abstract Background: The effect of low rates of glyphosate has been widely studied in several crops. Low nitrogen stress reduces carbohydrate synthesis and we hypothesize that hormesis from glyphosate occurs at low nitrogen availability. Objective: To evaluate the effects of glyphosate hormesis at different levels of nitrogen on the growth and yield of white oat. Methods: A two-factor factorial (2x7) was conducted in field testing at nitrogen levels (50 and 90 kg ha-1) and low rates of glyphosate rates (0 - 180 g a.e. ha-1). The glyphosate was applied at the second node already formed. The growth and yield were evaluated. Results: Plant height was not affected by the nitrogen levels. A low rate of glyphosate induced a plant height increase up of...
